Best Albums

Vishal Bharadwaj on the 1’s and 3’s just dominated. The instrumentation, the fusion of genres, and the choice of singers was impeccable. Citylights by Jeet Ganguly ran on the back of Arijit Singh with interesting arrangements by the composer. SEL delivered on Mary Kom by two debut composers again did a great job with singer choice and diversity of arrangements, helped by an exotic star on “Chaoro”. Gunday was an underrated album  with great classical, party, and rhythmic songs.

  1. Haider – Vishal Bharadwaj (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fqm6X2H_erg)
  2. Citylights – Jeet Ganguly (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MCfIPTyMjI)
  3. Dedh Ishqiya – Vishal Bharadwaj (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lJ6QQZ5mSfA)
  4. One By Two – Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySG2ynu5plE)
  5. Mary Kom – Shivam Pathak, Shashi Suman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJDpPzEjTm4)
  6. Ek Villain – Mithoon, Ankit Tiwari, Soch (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zFxo_397aL8)
  7. Gunday – Sohail Sen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O2bnxiN_-bo)
  8. Bang Bang – Vishal-Shekhar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LLkLhvot6a4)
  9. 2 States – Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v8HKNHhEDRU)
  10. Raja Natwarlal – Yuvan Shankar Raja (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_v67MQqyXg)

  12. Highway – A. R. Rahman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hK8nmvAUnA)
  13. Mumbai Delhi Mumbai – Sawan Dutta (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzqPVU97giw)
  14. Daawat-e-Ishq – Sajid Wajid (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fU8GCCsboRU)
  15. Shaadi Ke Side Effects – Pritam, Mikey McCleary (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIcOgTQ43Rg)

Best Composers

1’s and 3’s Vishal Bharadwaj. Enough said. SEL had great songs in One By Two especially, with 2 States and Kill Dil also being decent. Vishal-Shekhar had a lot of solid party tunes, but also were able to capitalize on interesting songs like “Meherbaan”. Jeet Ganguly and Ankit Tiwari mostly featured on random soundtracks but did decent jobs with the songs they composed.

  1. Vishal Bharadwaj (Dedh Isnqiya, Haider)
  2. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (One By Two, 2 States, Kill Dil)
  3. Vishal-Shekhar (Hasee Toh Phasee, Bang Bang, Happy New Year)
  4. Jeet Ganguly (Citylights, Youngistaan, Singham Returns)
  5. Ankit Tiwari (Ek Villain, PK, Samrat & Co., Singam Returns)

Best Dubbed Songs

A. R. Rahman, Jeet Ganguly, and Sachin-Jigar dominate this with their Tamil, Bengali, and Telugu originals, respectively.

  1. Mera Gham – Kochadaiyaan – A. R. Rahman – Shreya Ghoshal, Javed Ali (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I9BXzdeQzAA)
  2. Sun Le Zara – Singham Returns – Jeet Ganguly – Arijit Singh (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fzNhYzRZQQA)
  3. Jaise Mera Tu – Happy Ending (originally from “D for Dopidi”) – Sachin-Jigar – Arijit Singh, Priya Panchal (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QBrXzw6xrXg)
  4. Din Dooba – Lingaa – A. R. Rahman – Haricharan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLsm87215ZI)

  10. Aaya Khwaab Ka Mausam – Kochadaiyaan – A. R. Rahman – Raghav Mathur (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItRhGvRbKp8)

  1. You don’t seem to have a permanant opinion…I think it changes with time…During half yearly report,Highway>Ek Villain>Shaadi Ke Side Effects>Lekar Hum Deewana Dil>2 States…But now inorder to bring your favourite composers(SEL,Pritam) to top,you have changed it to Ek Villain>2 states>Highway>Shaadi Ke Side Effects and LHDD not on the list…To insult ARR more you put the average Raja Natwarlal above Highway…I had a doubt when you put race 2 in top 10 last year and avoided Raanjhannah from the list…Leaving your site,Raanjhannah was in top 5 everywhere…And you shouted at everyone who supported ARR for Raanjhannah calling them biased for Rahman…u are not ready to accept the fact that you are biased against rahman…Hoping that the awesome scores of Kaaviya Thalaivan and kochaadiyaan won’t be there in your tamil list…god bless you. 🙂

    • I haven’t connected with Amit Trivedi’s recent work. Maybe he’ll impress me with Bombay Velvet. I’m biased towards melodies, classical, and rock in Hindi, and not the “cute” and “funky” songs of Queen.

  2. Jeet da aur Pritam da are the best composers and Arijit da is the best singer…..our bengalis are the best. citylights #2 well deserved, was hoping for number one

  3. Good to see Vishal Bharadwaj at the top, dont let the inevitable stream of arr worshippers shout you down. these idiots will call his farts music

  4. Pritam started composing from 2010…Most of his works till 2010 was copied…I agree that he has given some excellent albums after that like the classy barfi, cocktail, massy agent vinod etc…Among this year’s albums,Shaadi Ke Side effects was good…but comparing with arr is stupid because pritam is just in the initial stage as a composer…He have to do more stuff to be compared with arr…The only composers of present that can be compared with arr is the talented trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy…but they too go down if we consider arr’s contribution to the tamil also…And the songs of south India are far better than pritam’s…South indian composers like ghibran, santhosh narayanan are far better than pritam…

  5. I agree that it is stupid for fans to think that arr should always come 1st but it is cruel to say that arr haven’t adapted according to time…Highway and Lekar Hum Deewana Dil were good albums…Both of the films were unsuccessful but music sales was good…If he is constitently giving bad albums, why would he have such a big fan base? The effect of the oscars have already gone…The best proof for that is that not many people have noticed that 3 albums and 4 songs of arr have been nominated for the oscars 2014…He can survive only if he give good albums and he is doing that well 🙂

    • That’s great but, I would prefer you provide a reasoned argument for why ARR’s Hindi work in 2014 was superior to that of Vishal Bharadwaj, SEL, Vishal-Shekhar, Jeet Ganguly, Ankit Tiwari, or Mithoon.

  7. @Deccan Music, but I think it will be nice if you just recheck the earlier lists because too much of changes can make people doubt you and your sense of music…just a humble request from my part…go ahead with what you are comfortable 🙂

    • See, if I make a list in say 2/2015 – that list is a snapshot of how I thought the songs ranked in that month (set being all songs released in 2/2015). If its for 1-6/2015 then the set is all songs released in the first half of 2015. a yearly list will then look at the whole year and obviously based on whats released certain rankings will change. if 1 great qawwali came out in jan, but then between july and dec 15 other great qawwalis came out, then its hard to rank the original song as high on a yearly list because the genre was done to death.

  8. @Deccan Music-I have not said that arr is better than vishal bharadwaj in 2014…It would be stupid if an arr fan thinks that only he should give good music…I am not saying that highway and LHDD are better than Haider but if I prepare a list of good albums of 2014,definitely the 3 will be there…But We do have the right to express our disappointment when good stuff like Raanjhannah is avoided and an average album(IMO) is included in the list…If someone comments like that, then haters starts to insult arr by saying ‘pritam better composer than arr’, ‘even his fart sound like music for you guys’,’he is paying itunes to put his songs on top’ etc which is very cruel 😦

  9. @Deccan Music,Here is my opinion about performance of composers in 2014-Vishal Bharadwaj>SEL>ARR=Vishal Shekhar>Amit Trivedi>Jeet>pritam>Mithoon…Like your case with Amit trivedi is my opinion about Mithoon…I think he is getting too repetetive and his work in 2014 has been sub standard IMO

  10. I feel pity for certain guys who support composers based on their state…We should learn to appreciate good music…The thoughts like the best composers are from my state only, the best singers are from my state only, all others suck etc are stupid…Worser than that,if someone says good about a composer of other state, they will start shouting at them…

  11. Ha LHDD a good album, what a joke – who are dese idiots that cum n cmnt here….srzly bullshit album like LHDD cannot lick the shoes of a clas album lyk Haider…

  12. Haider is a serious film that requires strong music backing and needs to cover a wide range of genres to express different mindsets of the central charecter…LHDD on the other side is a simple rom com that needs only simple commercial kind of music…LHDD cannot be compared to haider it can be compared to albums like shaadi ke side effects, holiday, happy ending etc…Despite the terrible failure of the film, music was noted well which is a great thing…You guys are simply criticising the album because it is not the best of the year like Haider

    • No, people are criticizing it because ARR’s attempt at making “mass” music in Hindi fell on its face with LHDD. He unfortunately doesn’t integrate Punjabi, EDM, and Hip Hop elements as well as Pritam , V-S, Meet Bros, or Sachin-Jigar. His strength is creativity and instrumentation, not making bangers.

  13. “ARR’s attempt at
    making “mass” music in
Hindi fell on its face with
LHDD”-really?I think the main reason is the failure of the film like one by two…good songs for both IMO…Why is I and mereselayiten appreciated by people?(which was worser than LHDD)…the answer is simple-the songs got more exposure comparitively…and I am getting a headache thinking of your change in opinions…Earlier, you were the person who rated it more than 2 states, holiday etc which were also “massy” albums…I also read in twitter abt u saying that lingaa had the energy that kayal lacked…Now you are talking as if these are classics and arr albums are worst…may be I should stop following you..I am more convenient with milliblog and musicaloud…You seem to have strong desire that arr should be limited to classic and periodic stuff and do not want him to create competition to the “massy” music directors…anyway what to do?people still likes mereselayiten and khalifa along with idhayam and yarumilla…well,That shows his ability in succeeding in different genres…goodbye to you my friend…I got the reason why milliblog and musicaloud are more accessible than you.. Thanks 🙂
Note:-I repeat,I have no hatred towards other composers…I was just expressing my disappointment over unwanted arr bashing

    • Jesus Christ how desperate are AR Rahman fans here? He’s not the best composer in Hindi anymore. His era is over. We have better composers now and all the South Indians whining in the can’t change that.

  14. ok…have been hearing the same comment from haters since 2000…People are criticising me just because I supported an arr album…well, that shows their hunger to put him down…if his era is over, why are you guys shouting when I said I liked his songs?

  15. SEL consistently impress with their albums, tough that they had to compete with dedh ishqiya and haider this year. whata bout lakshmi? did you not like the album? and mithoon?

  16. I have never said he is god of music…I have never said he is the best in bollywood now…I have just said that I liked his 2014 Hindi albums…Believe it or not-I am not in the same relegion or state of arr…the only thing that connects me to him is his music…And please stop attacking me now…I thought I too have the right to express my opinions…never imagined you guys will drag relegion into there _/\_

    • I think what that crazy poster was trying to say is that ARR is coasting on his prior work, and that his more crazy fans think everything he puts out is good in blind faith. They also ignore the strong competition he has, and attack people that listen to other composers and think they have produced better music. I saw last year’s comment threads, where admin and a few other commenters were viciously attacked by a horde of ARR fan chatterbots who didn’t even bother to listen to the songs in the list, but decided to defecate on the page with their zealotry, claiming the list had “crap music” (which it most certainly doesn’t).

  17. awards.giitaayan.com/2014/songs.asp
wow found a list that satisfied me as an ARR fan yet doesn’t make him god or anything…hope atleast now people got my point…I don’t want to call him god or I don’t want to bash others…it is just the intention for seeing him in a deserved place along with other new talents…no monthly or mid year list there…even if they had, they wouldn’t have made an album which was in a respectable position in the mid year list earlier into a ‘fall on its face’ album…positions may change but opinions remain the same…
